5 Tips For Cleaning & Caring For Aluminium Balustrades

Civico Manufacturing Co Pty Ltd • August 26, 2024

Balustrades are a popular choice for residential and commercial properties, offering a sleek, modern look while providing essential safety. However, like any architectural feature, they require regular maintenance to keep them looking their best and functioning properly. In this blog, we'll discuss some practical tips to help you maintain your aluminium balustrades.

1. Regularly Wipe Down Surfaces to Prevent Build-Up

Start by gently removing dust and dirt from the surface with a soft, lint-free cloth. It's important to be consistent with this routine, especially if your balustrades are located in areas prone to heavy dust or pollution. A more frequent cleaning schedule may be necessary for balustrades installed near busy roads or in industrial areas.

If you notice stubborn spots that don't come off with a simple wipe, use a cloth dampened with water to remove these areas without scratching the surface. Regularly wiping down your aluminium balustrades keeps them looking clean and helps prolong their lifespan.

2. Use Mild Cleaners to Avoid Corrosion

Avoid using abrasive pads or harsh chemical cleaners, as these can scratch the surface or cause a chemical reaction that leads to corrosion. Instead, use a gentle detergent mixed with warm water. Apply the mixture with a soft sponge or cloth and gently scrub the surface to remove any grime or grease.

For tougher stains, consider using a specialised aluminium cleaner, but make sure it's free of harsh acids. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and test the cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't damage the finish.

3. Check for Loose Fixtures & Fasteners

Start by visually inspecting the balustrades for any signs of movement or gaps between the fittings and the surfaces they're attached to. If you notice any loose components, use the appropriate tools to tighten them.

If you're unsure about how to check or tighten the fixtures or if you notice significant movement that could indicate a more serious issue, it’s best to consult a professional.

4. Rinse Thoroughly After Cleaning to Remove Residue

Using a garden hose or a bucket of clean water, thoroughly rinse the balustrades, ensuring all traces of cleaning solution are removed. Pay special attention to corners and crevices where soap residue can accumulate.

If possible, use a low-pressure setting on your hose to avoid damaging the surface or causing water to seep into joints and fixtures. After rinsing, allow the balustrades to air dry or wipe them down with a soft, dry cloth to prevent water spots.

5. Protect Against Harsh Weather Conditions

If your aluminium balustrades are installed outdoors, consider applying a protective coating designed specifically for aluminium. This can shield the surface from UV rays, rain and other environmental factors that could cause fading or corrosion over time.

Reapply the coating as recommended by the manufacturer to maintain its protective benefits. In areas prone to severe weather, such as coastal regions with salty air or locations with extreme temperature fluctuations, additional measures may be necessary.
